Helping people to help themselves
Taking the future into one’s own hands
The social commitment of the Deutsche Bank Foundation
The Deutsche Bank Foundation’s social projects are characterised by our efforts to help people in dire circumstances pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, through specific further education programmes and personal care tailored to their specific situations. Our emphasis lies on projects that expand career perspectives for socially disadvantaged and disabled young people.
As such, the Foundation follows the tradition of the “Helping People Help Themselves” foundation, founded in 1987 on the initiative of Alfred Herrhausen, Spokesman of the Board at that time, the first institionalisation of Deutsche Bank’s social commitment.

The Bank’s social commitment expressed by the “Alfred Herrhausen Fund “Helping People to Help Themselves” continues in the “Deutsche Bank Foundation”, the result of the merger of the Herrhausen Fund with the “Deutsche Bank Cultural Foundation”.
In contrast to other Foundation funding activities, which are usually planned in the long term, this fund enables the relatively short-term support of social projects, along with individual assistance in dire cases. It thus represents an important addition to our aid spectrum.

The Deutsche Bank Foundation also organises fund-raising campaigns among employees and customers, for example, to provide relief aid after natural disasters. Emergency aid and fund-raising campaigns outside of Germany take place in co-ordination with other, local Deutsche Bank foundations in the respective regions.

Alfred Herrhausen Fund
The Alfred Herrhausen Fund backs projects according to the philosophy that the most effective way of helping is to enable people to determine their own destinies. In line with this philosophy, the bank relies on cooperation with local organisations, experts and institutions in the sensitive area of social commitment. [more]
Disaster relief
The Deutsche Bank Foundation been providing assistance to people in disaster regions for more than a decade: after the severe flooding in Eastern Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic in 1997, it rendered both immediate and long-term aid to those in need. In subsequent years as well, the Foundation repeatedly provided targeted reconstruction aid in disaster areas around the world. [more]
